Here at HogGaiters, we knew if we wanted to produce the very best finished products, we must start with the very best leather. So we put on our Dick Tracy hats and searched for the highest quality leather money can buy. And we found it!
Our tannery has a rich history, and has been manufacturing the finest quality leather available since 1872. We use only "Mighty Fine Genuswine Bovine Leather" for all of our products.
Regular chaps are usually constructed with 4 to 5 oz. leather. We only use weights of 5.5 to 6 oz. waterproof "Mighty Fine Genuswine Bovine Leather" providing additional lower leg protection where you need it most. Please don't misunderstand, chaps are a wonderful thing and we have made many 1000-plus mile pilgrimages to Sturgis, Laconia and Daytona.
What we found is that as long as it was dry and not too hot, and you didn't want to get into your front pockets, chaps worked great. However, no matter how well we maintained our leather with surface treatments of creams, oils and salves, this only protected the surface of the leather and gave them little water repellency. If the flesh side of the leather got wet it would absorb water like a sponge adding water and weight to your chaps.
"Mighty Fine Genuswine Bovine Leather" is the finest most functional leather we have ever seen, but great looks and feel aren't the only benefits. When we designed "Original WaterProof" HogGaiters, form had to follow function. Does it do what it is designed to do? 'Cause as our granddaddy used to say, "Y'all can dress a pig up and make 'em look real purdy, but don't forget, der still a pig."
From the very start, during the tanning process, rich waterproof nutrence are pressurized and impregnated into the very fibers and cells of the leather preventing water from being absorbed making our waterproof not just water resistant or water repellant as most surface treatment do.
We also exclusively use YKK Zippers with locking slides, cause there ain't a more irritating situation than to be running down
the road with a pack of your friends and having your zipper start walking its way up the back of your leg and your chaps are now flappin' in the breeze, stopping the pack and pull over to fix the problem, re-zipping and continuing 50 miles down the road and pulling off to fix them again. Wouldn't it be just as easy to install
the best zipper money can buy with a "locking slide". We have even gone one step further installing a snap tab to secure the tongue of our YKK Zippers insuring that they stay locked.
Our skilled leather craftsman are true artisans with years and years of experience fabricating not only our "OriginaL WaterProoF" HogGaiterS but contracting leatherwork for the motion picture industry projects such as the television series "Lonesome Dove".
